Why a holistic GP might be just what you are looking for…

Have you ever left a GP appointment feeling like you only had time to mention one of your concerns ? “One problem per appointment” is a common policy - but it is likely your issues are related and focusing on one at once might not give you the answer that you need. As a GP I used to be able to ask people to come back next week for another consultation and we can try to join the dots to see whats really going on for you…and now I hardly get to see the same person twice. It's one of the most common frustrations people share with me - they ask : why do I have to start again with another doctor? And that’s one of the reasons I started offering consultations through Futurehealth Brighton.

The NHS is remarkable, and I'm proud to still work within it. But the reality is that the ten, even fifteen, minute appointment model makes it genuinely difficult for doctors to do what we were trained to do: listen, think holistically, and treat the whole person. That's where a holistic GP can make a real difference. And if you live in striking distance of Brighton, Hove, Shoreham or Lewes I can easily come to see you in person.

So what does "holistic" actually mean?

The word gets used a lot, so it's worth being clear. Holistic medicine isn't about replacing conventional care with crystals or vitamin infusions, ( although there's nothing wrong with a good walk in the South Downs!) It means looking at the whole picture of your health — your sleep, your diet, your movement, your relationships, your work, your mental state — and understanding how these things integrate and influence each other.

When someone comes to me with persistent fatigue, for example, I wouldn’t just check their thyroid and send them on their way. I want to know how they're sleeping. What their mornings look like. Whether something in their life has changed recently, whether they feel connected to the people around them. Often, the answers are all there — they just need the time and space to emerge.

The value of being truly listened to

Over twenty years as a GP in and around Brighton, I've had the privilege of listening to over 50,000 people. What I've learned, above almost anything else, is that feeling genuinely heard is itself therapeutic. It changes the conversation. It builds trust. And it often reveals things that a rushed appointment simply wouldn't uncover. My aim is not to offer councelling but to enable you to understand and integrate what is happening in your own mindbody so that you can be as functional and and joyful as you can be.

That's why, at Futurehealth Brighton, I offer longer consultations — either online or as home visits across Brighton, Hove, and the surrounding areas. There's no rushing to the door at the eleven-minute mark. We have time to talk about what's really going on. And if you want to see me again I will be available, you won’t have to begin again with a doctor that you don’t know.

A focus on health, not just disease

Conventional medicine is, quite rightly, brilliant at diagnosing and treating illness. But I've always been more interested in the question that sits just before that: how do we help people feel genuinely well? Not just the absence of symptoms, but real vitality — the kind that comes from sleeping well, moving your body with joy, eating in a way that suits you, and feeling creatively and socially alive. This is the philosophy behind everything I do. Whether you're navigating a long-term condition, feeling stuck in patterns that don't serve you, or simply looking for a doctor who will treat you as a whole human being rather than a set of symptoms — a holistic GP in Brighton who takes the time to understand you can be genuinely life-changing.
